CAT exposes sale of Cool Lip Tobacco Product near Schools

In one of the CAT Training Programmes, a child mentioned that a tobacco product with the name “Cool Lip” is a favorite among school going children. After investigation it was found that the product is easily available in shops near schools, even though there is “prohibition on sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of an educational insitituion”. Tej Ram Dharam Paul Company is the tobacco company which is producing “Cool Lip” tobacco product. It is meant to be consumed by popping the “Filter Tabbaq Pillows” under the upper lip.

Upon gathering details, representation letters were sent to School Education Department, The Commissioner Food Safety of Tamil Nadu. In response to the representation sent by us to the Food Safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (National Body) sent a letter to the State Commissioner of Food Safety to take action on the issue.

The product has been produced in the State of Punjab and hence representation was sent to the Punjab Government. With the advocacy of the National Tobacco Control Community, the Government of Punjab has taken the advanced measure in order to abolish the presence of tobacco. In view of public interest and health, the Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Prakash Singh Badal ordered to ban the manufacturing of “Gutka/Pan Masala”, processed/flavored/scented chewing tobacco and any other food products containing tobacco or nicotine in the state.
